Research Focus

Research focus

Proper neuronal signalling depends on interactions between the myelin basic protein (MBP) and lipids within the myelin sheath. Disturbances in these interactions perturb neuronal signal transmission, such as in multiple sclerosis. This highlights the need for a nanoscale understanding of the biophysical characteristics of MBP, myelin membranes and how their properties and mutual interactions change during neuronal signalling. Additional projects are focused on structure and dynamics of light-sensitive photoreceptor proteins as well as on pharmaceutically relevant monoclonal antibodies in solution.

To address these questions on the molecular and mesoscopic level, my research group investigates protein and membrane systems and analyses their biophysical behaviour using a range of complementary techniques including neutron and X-ray scattering, cryo-electron microscopy and confocal fluorescence microscopy. The combined methodology allows a comprehensive study of key features in synthetic myelin-like structures and of the structural and dynamical properties of photoreceptors and antibodies.
